Hi IZUM, hello future volunteer
My name is Pedro, I’m 20 years old and
I’m from Portugal. When I finished my degree in Environmental Engineering, I realized that I wanted something more and that volunteering could fill a void I felt. I applied for this project because I believe that children are the future, and if I can be an agent of change in some way, an inspiration, the project is worth it.
During my time as a volunteer, I had the opportunity to work with children aged 4 to 15, participating in and leading various games, activities, theatre performances, storytelling sessions, and more. I also organized cultural workshops based on my personal interests and studies, and worked closely with a large, diverse team, which introduced me to amazing new people. Learning a new language and experiencing a different culture were also valuable parts of my experience.
Alongside my fellow volunteer, Jéssica, we hosted two events where we shared Portuguese culture through presentations on cities, food, and music. I spent a week in the forest of Tammispea, organizing activities for 14 and 15-year-olds, followed by three weeks in urban camps, each with a unique theme.
I also had the chance to work with the youngest group, children aged 4 to 6, which added another layer of learning and growth to my volunteer journey.
This volunteering project wasn't just about working, spending time with children, creating activities, laughing and getting to know each other.
It was about being in another country with a different language. Dealing with homesickness, missing moments with friends, the hugs from parents and the laughter with my sister. The home that welcomes us, the neighbour who greets us and the town that knows us.
The moments we missed because of the distance. Sharing a house, working with many other people, going supermarket shopping and not recognizing the shelves. About the not-so-good moments when we wished we were home, leaving everything behind. About feeling alone and without a support network.
However, it's also about being able to travel, free and without schedules, in a new city. Tasting new food, trying to learn a new language even with the youngest. Creating new friendships with just a few words, or even none.
Creating curiosity in a culture and being immersed in a new one.
Talking loudly in the street because they don't understand us, and not realizing when they are talking to us. Being able to almost call a place you never imagined, home.
I can advise you, with all certainty, that I have grown so much, and I hope everyone can have this opportunity I am so grateful. If you have doubts about applying alone or are afraid of being alone, I hear you, but I am sure you will find people that you care about and will make the most of your experience.
Cпасибо IZUM, I’m forever grateful!
